Tonight was the opening reception for my friend Holly's collection of collages inspired by haiku. The haiku in turn was inspired by Holly's morning commute through the fields and woods of Powhatan, Goochland, and Henrico Counties. There was no way to pull off the highway and take pictures of the beauties of Nature, so instead she composed the spare form of poetry known as haiku, and then later created a series of collages of fabric and paper for each poem. Each work is so personal and unique. Other pictures in this collection include Holly's husband Don playing Christmas music on his mandolin. He was part of a trio with a wonderful Appalachian sound. The reception was held at an old farm out in the country and works by Sarah Masters were also displayed along with the very reasonably-priced ceramics of a local potter. You can see my friends succumbing to the beauty of the potter's craft. It was a great night for friendship and art. This is best viewed with the magnifier.
