The Long-Awaited Announcement

I skipped lunch today so I could watch the live webcast from Seattle where the American Library Association was holding its midwinter meeting. It is always on Monday morning of that meeting that the most prestigious children's book awards are announced. Not only is it exciting to watch the announcements, but it is fun to see if we had predicted the winner and had the book in our collection.
One the right you can see the Newbery Award-winning title, The One and Only Ivan. The Newbery Medal was named for eighteenth-century British bookseller John Newbery. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children. Not only did we have this book in our collection but many of our 4th grade classes had already read this book in a Global Read Aloud program in October.
The book on the left was announced as the Caldecott winner. The Caldecott Medal was named in honor of nineteenth-century English illustrator Randolph Caldecott, and is awarded annually to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children, published in that year. The book is This is Not My Hat written and illustrated by Jon Klassen. I would have been more impressed by this story if the same author/illustrator hadn't created a very similar story last year titled, "I Want My Hat Back."
Awesome

In reference to the "This Is Not My Hat" are you thinking the author should have gone in a totally different direction? Is this a sequel to last year's?

Ahhhh, the library, my refuge as a child.

@digitalrn Not a sequel. More like telling the same joke twice.

I'm not surprised that your library had both on the shelves! I had the same thought as Rick- was Jon Klassen doing a series and this is the sequel to book #1?

I haven't seen any of the winners but I'm drawn to the cover of Klassen's book. I once read every N and C but that was when I was a children's librarian. I've slipped into adult fiction now and am woefully ignorant of kid lit written after 1995.

Wonderful composition for your shot! I do like the picture of the fish wearing a hat though - I guess once you get the hang of drawing hats, you can write lots of books putting them on different things...

Really nice display, Allison.

Having just returned from Boston and the announcements, I decided to do a tag search of "Caldecott" photos -- and three of us in this project have used that tag! This is one, I have a few, and someone else has tagged Caldecott! Did you listen today? Were you there??? What do you think?

You're right -- good thing you had both books in your collection already! Wasn't the Newbery a surprise? I reread it last night with Newbery eyes and wondered whether the book worked primarily as text and without the significance of the last illustration . . .
