I took this picture of the back of historic Main Street Station when we were downtown on Sunday.
From Wikipedia:
Richmond's Main Street Station in the downtown area was built in 1901 by the Seaboard Air Line Railroad (SAL) and the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway (C&O).
The ornate Main Street Station was designed by the Philadelphia firm of Wilson, Harris, and Richards in the Second Renaissance Revival style.
After Hurricane Agnes caused the James River to flood the station in 1972, Amtrak moved to a much smaller suburban station in Henrico County in 1975, ending service. To make matters worse, the station was damaged by fires in 1976 and 1983. Main Street Station saw no rail passengers until 2003, when it was renovated and returned to service, reopening on December 18, 2003.
Tomorrow John and I will be taking the train from that smaller (but more convenient) suburban station to South Station in Boston to spend some time with daughter Meg and her husband. It will take all day, but we load our iPads with e-books and settle down in the "quiet car" (no talking allowed or aloud!) and have a restful journey, arriving in time for a wonderful anniversary dinner prepared by our 2 resident chefs!
Interesting history and a great capture processed in the sepia tones. Have a wonderful trip to Boston ---- I envy you traveling by train ;-) I love trains. Happy Anniversary, too!
