Although the markings of a juvenile blue jay are pretty much the same as an adult, I decided this visitor was a youngster. He was smaller than the others and seemed to be watching everything carefully before he made a move. Today he took several minutes to get a sunflower opened, using the tried-and-true “hold it with your feet and pry it open with your beak” technique that the others are quite adept at. He sure is cute!
