Where are the books? Actually I snapped this picture this morning before classes started to show the group dynamics of 9 and 10 year olds. This is only one section of the library. There are kids doing more traditional library activities in other areas. I thought this was an interesting capture for many reasons. The kids are exploring language and math activities posted on the school website.
The first thing you notice is that being on the computer is not a solitary activity. For every child seated, there are several watching, offering suggestions, joking and just generally being companionable.
Next you'll notice that there are just as many girls as boys at the computers. The days when only boys liked technology are long gone.
And finally, notice how the groups are divided by gender. Whether it is because of the activity they choose or just being comfortable with their own kind (These are 3rd and 4th graders.) kids tend to congregate in single sex groups.
All through the winter and on a rainy day like today, the computers in our reference area are some of the hottest seats in town. But wait for the first warm Spring days, and many of these groups will assemble outdoors.
I love this shot for so many reasons. I love to see kids seeking knowledge. Libraries have come such a long way from just going in and being quiet and reading. So many different ways to learn going on in there today. I also like the outside through some cool windows. Great observation on the kids. great job.
Young people are so into the computer world, and that is great. I think it will open up so many new opportunities for them as they grow. things are advancing at an alarming rate in the cyber world.
I was thinking the same thing about our library!! In fact, our librarian has been visiting my classroom talking about research using computers, not books. Times have changed. Great picture to show your world.
