About 25 members of the faculty are taking an online professional development course with Tom Daccord. The course description explains "The class will help teachers understand the role of technology in cultivating intellectually curious students, support teachers as they try new approaches in their classrooms, and provide them with animated conversations about teaching and learning."
According to his bio on the Edtechteacher.org website, Tom Daccord is an educational technology specialist and author of "Best Ideas for Teaching with Technology: A Practical Guide for Teachers by Teachers" and "The Best of History Web Sites". A veteran "laptop teacher" who instructed in a wireless laptop environment for seven years, Tom has been featured in the Boston Globe ("Making Tech Connect," December 29, 2003) for his contributions to teaching with technology.
As part of the course, we spent the day face to face (or F2F as they say) with Tom as he gave us an opportunity to work in small groups and individually with Google apps. (Normally Tom is in Boston and our sessions are online.) The last panel of my collage is the first slide in a presentation my small group prepared reviewing what we learned today.
It was a stimulating day and we will continue to explore technology in the classroom for about 4 more sessions. Our school is so supportive in providing professional development, we took this class during the school day with substitutes provided for each of us and a great box lunch too!
That's really cool! It's so great that your school provides those kinds of opportunities for you to learn and makes it easy for you to take advantage of them.
As another participant in yesterday's session, I will support what my co-worker, @allie912 , says here. And as a tech resource teacher in our lower (aka elementary) school, I am thrilled that so many of our teachers signed up for this course. It means their students will reap the benefits!
