I need to select a neutral paint color for our kitchen renovation. I thought choosing yellow for the living room was hard. This selection is far more difficult. I did have a color called "biscuit" in mind, and there is a shade with that name, but is it really what I want? I have to decide by Monday morning. I'll tell you what I finally decide. Or better yet, I'll show you when the project is complete.
And the worst part is the color never looks the same on your wall. I picked a yellow once, thinking I had totally avoided choosing one with a greenish tint only to discover I had failed -- it was so hideous I bought a nice tan and painted over it. Life is too short to live with an ugly color on your walls. Good luck with your choice!
Don't know if you've already done this, but this is what my friend did with me (and she is an expert - for real). She narrowed it done to 5 colors - yes, neutrals just like yours. Then she got the paint sample pots and paint boards( not sure if that is the real name but they are about 12" square and look a little like a heavy poster board tile). Then she painted the five colors on a tile and we had to go all around the house (open floor plan makes it hard not to paint most of the downstairs) and put the boards up in different place with different lighting - natural near the windows, dark in the corners and where the electric lights shine. It seems like a lot if work, but I was able to see that all give shades of beige were not equal. Lol. We went with the one that didn't turn yellow or pink in the majority of lights. And here's the kicker - it was the color she pulled out of her color memory not one of the ones we picked from paint sample chips!! That was unbelievable to me!!! Another tip - her favorite paint is Sherwin Williams Cashmere. It is excellent quality and can be easily cleaned which is uber important with a slobbery dog like Rocco. The paint isn't cheap, but the painter who did the work said it is very good paint, but is more expensive than the other blends at Sherwin Williams. I have a coupon left over for $15 off that I can drop in the mail to you if you like. Just PM me on FB. I will tell you this - the process of checking the color in different light saved me from a big mistake and surprised me as to how different a single color can appear based on light. Hope that helps.
@pinktornado39 Thanks for your input Laura. Our contractor uses S-W altho' I don't know if it is Cashmere. The color sticks have the shades in families so we were able to omit the yellows and blues and basically explore the browns. I'm printing out your comment and sharing it with my contractor. We had already picked 3 shades and were planning to get the sample bottles, but your suggestions are even more complete. Thanks.
The contractor should be able to use what ever paint type you want. In my case, they had to prime over a terra cotta orange paint with a glaze before they could put the neutral color on - it was no small job.

Good luck! I'm sure it will be beautiful!
