A little lesson in etymology, Any sports fan knows that the football playing field is often referred to as a gridiron. Here you see the derivation -- a utensil consisting of parallel metal bars on which to broil meat or other food. This was on display in the kitchen of the English farm house at the Frontier Culture Museum. The difference, of course is that the parallel lines on a football field run the width, not the length of the field. And of course it doesn't have these cute little hearts in the middle.
