A couple of years ago the library purchased 5 Kindle readers for teachers to use with small groups. This year we added enough for a full classroom set. Since you can download one purchased e-book to 6 devices, we will only have to buy 4 copies of a title to outfit an entire class. The interesting thing is that the Kindle Fires we bought this year are cheaper and can do much more than the original Kindles from two years ago. We bought cases in 4 colors to differentiate which Kindles download which books. In case you are wondering, the original set, with black cases, is currently in a classroom.
What an amazing offering to the children, and for the initial outlay, these will be so gratifying in the years to come! I have to confess, however, for librarians who have such a love of books, it will be sad to see paper books go the way of the dinosaurs!
@Weezilou Right now I am gritting my teeth at the updates and configuration that has to be done before the devices go out to the classroom. I think it will serve a specific purpose in the classroom, but like you, I don't think it will replace print books -- at least not in the lower school.
