We had driven along the rim of this volcanic natural wonder. And now we were driving down to the Crater itself. it was quite foggy but burned off by the time we got to the ground level.
Ngorongoro Crater is the world's largest inactive, intact and unfilled volcanic caldera. The crater, which formed when a large volcano exploded and collapsed on itself two to three million years ago, is 2,000 feet deep and its floor covers 100 square miles. Estimates of the height of the original volcano range 14,800 to 19,000 feet. About 30,000 animals live within the Crater and never need to leave because all their needs can be met. Our guide told us their are 2 other craters like this in Japan and the Philippines, but they are each covered by a natural lake so can not be a home to wildlife the way Ngorongoro is.
