Sixteenth Century Art

Here are just a few of the portraits that line the walls at Agecroft along with a stained glass crest and an intricately carved panel. The portraits were all painted on wood panels and are originals. I wish I had the energy to share what I learned today concerning the stories behind the faces. Just a few tidbits — the rather worldweary gentleman on the middle row is James I.The portrait right above was one of the owners of Agecroft who was dressed in the rather androgynous style of the Elizabethan period. The man on the middle left was mistakenly thought to be Martin Luther because of the cap and the lady on the lower right was also mistakenly thought to be Elizabeth.
