Lake Buninjon is a saline lake to the west of Melbourne near the Gariwerd (Grampians) mountain range. South western Victoria has over 1500 wetlands and lakes ranging from very small, shallow ephemeral systems, to large, deep, permanent lakes. Most are within the Corangamite Basin and are volcanic in origin (craters, depressions between lava flows). Many of the lakes are salty due to geology and climate and many do not have an outflow or only during extremely wet periods. As you can see in the foreground of this photo, indigenous samphire (Tecticornia sp) thrives in these conditions
