As tall as a person, with a high helmet on its head, a vivid blue neck and long drooping red wattles—the southern cassowary is found only in the tropical rainforests of north-east Queensland, Papua New Guinea and some surrounding islands. They are a ratite and therefore related to the other flightless birds - emus, ostriches, Rheas and Kiwis.
The southern cassowary is listed as Endangered nationally.
@golftragic Babs said the same thing - I 'm not sure they're as bad as their reputation - I have hand fed a few - given I was well out of the way of their sharp toe hahaha and I would be wary of getting too close in the wild - I'd be wary getting too close to a wild kangaroo or wombat also :)
@annied I believe they're fine as juveniles, lots of kids in PNG have them as pets at that stage. But once they mature apparently they're very unpredicable and can be quite vicious.
@golftragic I had a male reds front paws up on my shoulders once - he was huge - I am about 6ft and his head was just above mine - according to the ranger scratching his chest meant I wanted to be his girlfriend hahahahaha
