Moving Water by artsygang

Moving Water

Well, I had my first try at painting moving water and picked a photo I had taken of a pair of mini waterfalls in Peasholme Park in Scarborough to base it on.

I found it really difficult! Not for the first time, I wish I had a teacher and wasn't just making all this up as I go along lol. No idea what I am doing. So if you have any tips on how to do this better, will you gently let me know? Cheers.

Casablanca
@casablanca I am not the best person to give advice as I have know idea about technique. I really get a sense of moving water from the top waterfall so whatever you have done there I would say repeat it in the lower half. I am sure you will be given some sound advice and well done for giving it a go. I must get my lazy ar….artist brush into action and give the paints a bit of a splash.

@casablanca I think you did really well with the top waterfall and the little lake in the middle. The bottom waterfall lacks some movement probably because you didn’t blend the greenish water with the top of the fall. I miss a bit of that colour in that fall too. It’s a bit difficult without seeing the photo. Overall it’s a great painting.

@casablanca I think this is a terrific painting for not having instruction and I certainly wouldn't know how to advise you . That being said the difference in the top water and the bottom water seems to be mainly of less constrast in the bottom one.

@casablanca I do like the top waterfall and that water seems to show movement. When it comes to the reflection, your brush strokes don't appear to be as loose/natural as shown in the upper falls. Maybe try turning your page around and paint that way. Also, in my opinion, the reflection shouldn't be as detailed as the main picture. All that being said, it's a lovely picture and does make me think of moving water.

@casablanca - you succeeded in conveying the sense of movement of the water, and i concur with the others that this is more apparent in the upper part of the waterfall. perhaps the bottom part needs a bit of shading to give it more 'movement'. as jacqueline noted, it would be easier to ascertain what is lacking without seeing the original photo. i take it this is in watercolour? if it is, my hat's off to you, kiddo. i find it difficult to portray water in that medium. big aces to you!

This is quite nice.

@wakelys Thanks, I think you are right. The top is better than the bottom.

@jacqbb Thanks for that, I see what you mean about the water blend.

@grammyn That makes perfect sense to me, thank you

@salza Thank you. The colour in the centre is a pile of leaves that were floating on the water's surface rather than a reflection, but your comments are really helpful. Still such a newbie!

@summerfield It is watercolour, I have never yet tried anything else! Tempted to try acrylic but not sure what the difference really is. I concur with your comments about the movement that are echoed in other comments too. Too white at the bottom (it was gouache and once it was on, I didn't know how to get it off LOL)

@casablanca acrylics are much more forgiving than watercolours. You should give them a try
