Though they look a bit raggedy, I don't usually cut back the old flowers until they are picked clean by the birds. The goldfinches love them

Wonderful you leave them for the birds. I too don't pick my rigoletto protea flowers (the only protea I have managed to keep alive year after year) because they look good on the bush anyway, and I have noticed the sunbirds love them so it seems selfish to put them in the house
