The Hotel MacDonald is named after Canada's first Prime Minister Sir John A. Macdonald. It was built by the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway between 1912-1915. It is a concrete and steel structure with Indiana Limestone. It cost $2.25 million. It opened July of 1915. The interior rotunda was done in marble and the lounge has a copy of the painting The Father's of Confederation.
The hotel was sold to Canadian Pacific Railway in 1990 and they closed it down while undergoing major renovations. It reopened in 1991. Today it is part of the Fairmont Hotel Chain.
My wife and I love to go and sit on the patio and enjoy a nice supper while viewing the beautiful river valley.
