A large part of Edmonton's history is connected to the railroad. The first train into this area rolled into what was then called South Edmonton on these tracks in 1891.
It was a train with the C & E Railway. Later the Canadian Pacific took over this line and built the Station that is on the right side of the track
When this line was shut down and the station closed CP Rail kept the building and leased it out to different tenants. The most recent was a restaurant and bar called the Iron Horse.
Today it sits empty once again and that is what caught my eye as I walked past. It is now an abandoned Railway Station and railroad tracks.
interesting that you have disused railway lines too. we've had quite a few of our railroad tracks made into cycle or walking paths, and a lot of houses from the stations
it is sad, isn't it? the great thing that built our nation is disappearing. this is a wonderful picture made more so by the interesting information that accompanied it. thank you for this.
Great perspective shot! I hope they find another use for it. Many places have turned them into hiking trails or bike paths. It's the best form of recycling!
@emmar84 Actually at the very end is a train car. The track is still used but ends just a little bit from where this shot was taken so you can see the cars on the track
I always find abandoned railways sad
