Life in The Neighbourhood. Then and Now

So today l went for a photo walk in the Oliver Neighbourhood. It is named a prominent Edmontonian, Frank Oliver. Politician, businessman and newspaper editor
This set of photos shows the McDougall Mansion built by John A. McDougall. After being in the family for many decades it was sold and became an orphanage. My friends father lived in this home for a number of years.
The bottom shot is the building that is there today
Have to say I prefer the old building. Pity it is no longer there.

The old building has so much more charm.

Lovely old building. i wonder how many others have gone and been replaced like this. An interesting catalogue of change

I so like your "then & now" comparison shots...Like the others I prefer the lovely old building...

How sad that the old building has been demolished and replaced with what looks like average apartment accommodation.
June 24th, 2018
I too am sorry the original home could not be saved. Even though the building today does look like it is well done.
June 24th, 2018
What a shame that the old building was demolished to make way for that.
June 24th, 2018
I like both of these buildings, and I guess none can last forever. Even though the McDougall house is gone, the memories and stories remain.

Thank you for telling us Edmonton's history. Always so fascinating!
June 24th, 2018
Great photos and interesting history
June 24th, 2018
yes, a shame but I suppose the original became uneconomic to run and repair. Interesting.
June 24th, 2018
I love the history you provide, thanks!
June 24th, 2018
What a beautiful building they tore down to build the new one. I also prefer the old one. Let's hope it was beyond saving Saving when it was torn down.
June 24th, 2018
Loved the old building. Such character.
June 24th, 2018
I like the older one better! Nice to see the differences.
June 24th, 2018
Interesting history and obvious more money was to be made from the newer building to line someones pocket.
June 24th, 2018
Striking contrast! Love the old building!
June 24th, 2018
