The founder of Saltburn, this is sculpture in his honour. The first corner stone for Alpha place was laid in 1861. He was an industrialist and visionary who was influential in creating the Stockton to Darlington railway. He proposed an extension to the railway to take the iron stone in East Cleveland to Teeside furnaces which gave him the chance to build a new seaside resort.
