This morning, as I was preparing a batter for dutch pancakes for everyone, a friend on the porch kept calling my name (quite emphatically at one point), and I finally poked my head out the screen door. "Daryl, there's a hawk in the tree! Go get your camera!"
So, I rushed back into the house tripping over myself to grab my Canon Rebel--oh, but I needed the zoom. Yes, the zoom, but I didn't want the hawk to fly away! I ran out the back door and realized I could not view the bird from there. I ran back in the house, nearly tripped over myself, and ran out the other side of the house (quietly, of course) but with my hand held high with the camera facing skywards because the sprinklers were on. If someone had followed me in these first few seconds to minutes with a video camera, I would have provided a serious comedy routine. When I finally got my camera focused on the bird, I shook from the excitement--I could have an awesome photo for today!
I took 40 photos of the one bird, then another hawk came swooping in (the one on the right)--so here they are. The left hawk looks like the juvenile--and the right hawk looks maybe like a parent? I certainly got "the look." What a day!
@mej2011 It was just incredible. I have so many shots too of just the one on the left because he stayed there very long. The one on the right flew away (which I caught as well). In the end--this one just gives me a big smile!
@judis Thanks Judi! I had such a great closeup also of the juvenile, but I chose this one because I had two hawks in one shot and it was very clear (suprisingly because my hands kept shaking in excitement!).
Haha! I know what you mean about getting all excited! I saw 2 hawks playing/jousting over territory (I presume). I didn't get anything worth posting, unfortunately...they were too far away. This is a wonderful capture and yes, I think they are Red-shouldereds as well.
