Blue Jay vs. Hawk by darylo

Blue Jay vs. Hawk

I've been chasing Cardinals all week dagnabit! And just as I was about to lose another desperate battle to get the Cardinal to sit still, I heard Blue Jays in attack mode--which meant....HAWK incoming. SWOOOSH it came and rested in a tree in my neighbor's back yard (pretty high up, so quality is not the focus here).

Two blue jays accompanied this fellow (a red tailed hawk, I think) and kept trying to attack his head. I did get a few shots of the poor jay just looking like a hot mess menacing the hawk, but the photos were too blurry or focus was out of whack! The Hawk here has his eye on the jay. The jay is planning his attack.

Lovely morning to get this photo after working out at the gym and planning the dreaded spring cleaning--can't put it off. With photo "done," I have no excuses!
very nice Daryl great story too

Nice shot Daryl, you had much better luck with your Hawk than I did today.
Crouched down in garden taking today's flower shot, a Sparrowhawk swooped past about a foot over my head and flew up and down looking for prey, grabbed camera off tripod , and still set on macro fired off a few shots. Got some wonderful shots!!!
Blurred bushes or lovely empty grey skies !!!
So well done.

@markp Ha! I know what you mean. I swear, there should be a book with "the story behind the photo." Thanks for the comments!

@darylo Mockingbirds give hawks hell! Your hawk was very aware of his situation. Great catch!

Good get. Love the way he's looking up at the jay. Go ahead, make my day ! : ) I think this is an immature red-tailed, nice identification.
