I'm very happy that I tried this one today. First, great challenge Thomas. I'm almost always in Manual mode, but I rarely, rarely use f/16, so I decided to give all your instructions a go. This photo is all manual: manual settings, manual focus (yes, it takes being super still and getting a million crap shots), manual WB, and all other manual things!
It's sooc; it's not even cropped. I do believe I like it!
For those really trying to understand your cameras, I say it every time, "it's worth the experimentation!" I have rarely used these particular Sunny 16 settings, but I see where I may have missed something. I'm usually going for really moving targets (granted, this guy did move, but not like birds and the like), so I'm so focused on shutterspeed. This exercise put the whole triangle in place. Just one thing, you need loooots of sun. :)
Wonderful! Every time I use the Sunny 16 settings everything comes out horribly underexposed. I reckon that is because we don't get that many really sunny days over here in the UK!
Terrific example Darryl. I'm looking at total clouds, but this weekend will be in Colorado Springs where the sun shines brightly (usually -- hoping this weekend will be the same), so you've inspired me to try this there.
@steampowered Thanks Paul! Yes, I do not really get good light like this Sunny 16 needs, but in this case, I was really pleased that the dark areas are lacking that noise because I had the ISO on 100 (I think). It just makes the color pop in ways I have had to make happen with processing and covering up distortion. My only real complaint is that the manual focus causes some blurring on the red--shaky hands most likely and trying to stay still while the little critter moved some. But I still like the effect. I just love being able to say what I'm saying today. On day one, I would not have even had a single clue. What a wonderous journey we've been on!
@taffy I had clouds this morning and was going to do more word art for get-pushed, but then the sun came out. I finished grading, made some soup, and headed outside for a photography lunch!! Happy travels. Whatever you do take will be fantastic I am sure!
Awesome shot - just reading the CSC thread - confused because I shoot manual & thought snap, then read about sunny 16? So had read more carefully but noted your comments about focusing in manual and wanted to tell you about live view ( we have the same camera). There was either a CSC or technique challenge within the last month that had us use live view, with magnification and then manual focus - opened up a whole new world! Here it is http://365project.org/discuss/themes-competitions/19338/camera-setting-challenge-33-manual-focus-and-magnification-in-live-view. Seriously give it a go - I love it!
