Ok, I had plans for this one, but I don't have some of the equipment I need, nor do I have an external flash, which would really be helpful in these situations. I did learn that if I engage a forced flash, I can only go up to 200 shutterspeed--well, that won't work. I had a heart attack. I thought my camera was busted...
I also attempted dropping things in pans (and I needed a white backdrop, but no luck--only one piece of white cardboard in house. It's Sunday, I'm lazy.
Instead of employing my husband to continually drop lemons in my water, I thought, "hey, what if I reversed the process, dunking my hand in the water and pulled it out instead of trying to capture a splash; I could capture a water drop instead?" I also could control the focus a bit more (not by much). Used my nifty-fifty again. Edited the crap out of it especially with background as it was too distracting. Really wish I had had a white background. Note to self: buy white stuff.
A great exercise nonetheless. Off to a birthday party tonight, and I'll be taking shots of the birthday boy (well, birthday man; he's 50).
Once again, Cheers Jerry Plume! I really enjoy these challenges and I have loved seeing everyone else's work along the way. I'm going to hit a depression without all of this, but I do have hummers at the feeder and in my mimosa (oh, and if anyone is actually having problems with your feeder attracting the guys, I learned from a twelve-year-old whose nana told her to rinse the insides with parts of vinegar with water, and let dry). DID THE TRICK! Now I need sun to catch one of these guys. They are everywhere in the tree and the feeder. :)
I had the same problem - on-camera flash only allows 1/250th shutter. You found a very clever solution I think! (I've been known to tape a few pieces of printer paper together to create a white background. Now I have a nice big piece of white foam-core board I prop on a chair. My husband chuckles quietly to himself every time I use it.)
Can't wait to see the hummers. This is a great shot Daryl. How did you get that light on the lemon up top? Is that edited? I really like what you have done here. Neat shot.
Love this shot and the back story. I have the foam-core that @ksmale mentioned but also use white/cream felt. It's quick to drape and has a nice soft look.
I've been wanting a hummer for some time now! :o) Its always fun having a one night stand with you, Daryl! You seriously got some crisp focus on the droplets! Love the light through the lemon!
Trying the feeder trick too!
