"If you do one thing each day, make sure it is not for yourself, but for another" Daryl O'Hare
Every year in the town of Roswell, where I reside, there is the Miss Mary's Ice Cream Crankin' Event--and our family has attended for many of these past 10 years it has been in existence. The event sponsors the Drake House, which helps transition women from hopeless to hopeful situations with housing, financial assistance, and education. The executive director is someone I worked with at another organization locally called North Fulton Community Charities, and we have always enjoyed contact at this community event. It makes all the worries of the world subside because in this space people REALLY CARE about making a difference locally and globally. While many politicians troll the area each year, I was sooooo happy it was not election time for most of them so we could just see folks gather for a good cause. Last year, I took an awesome photo of the Ice Cream Eating Contest (two of my own family members are former winners), and I offered to the organization that photo free of charge to use as they liked for the event going forward. You can see it here: http://365project.org/darylo/365/2013-08-25 )
To Miss Mary. May the world care for those who rarely have a voice, a vote, or a mention. If you do one thing each day, make sure it is not for yourself, but for another. And that's all I have to say!
Now there is a competition I could get into. Ice-cream eating. Brilliant. And for such a good cause. It puts it all in perspective, don't you think - going to a charity event and seeing what a difference people can make. Now own up - were you one of the former winners, and how much ice-cream did you eat?
@888rachel My husband (he competed in the 14 and over competition--um, they made a cap on that after the over 45-year-old won...--and my oldest daughter a couple of years ago). Amazingly, I'm not a huge ice cream fan. But I'll eat it for a cause! :)
The world need s more Daryls - and from now on I shall think of a Daryl as the word that describes someone who is prepared to stand up and be counted for what he or she believes in. Yep - the world needs more Daryls...
