I am staying in the South Island for a few days to help look after our adult daughter who has had her tonsils removed. Today, in between showers, I went out on the bike and had a look around town - this lovely old church was a standout feature - I think it was built around 1880.
@pyrrhula I think most bricks used in the South Island are made near Christchurch. There is a town called Oamaru (in the South Island) that has lovely whitish stone - it is quarried, not man-made. @maggiemae lives there, so there might be some photos on her 365 site.
There are a lot of brick buildings in the south- and brickworks still! My grandparents owned a brick and tile works in Invercargill in the early 1900s. Lots of brick churches like this one! @pyrrhula in Oamaru we have a special limestone quarried and used for building.
