This tiny school is where my mother and her brother and sister completed their early education. They had a huge walk (one hour each way). The walk was over farmland - a big gully - with a creek to cross - a tree trunk with a handrail. Then another huge gully - (as you can see on the left) - it's no wonder mum has such long legs!!! She is 89 and still has vivid memories of the long hot walk. She says she used to dream that there would be a bridge across the gullies so they didn't have to walk all that downhill and uphill!
Yes it was a big walk for small children.. and I use to hear about not having shoes and they jumped from cow pad to cow pad to keep their feet warm... great captures.. fave
Beautiful story Diane.....love these personal tales & photos to go with them....your mum, aunts & uncle must have been tough cookies but would no doubt think nothing of it! Different today......the kids wouldn't do it, they want driving everywhere these days....mind you this is a very safe environment, must have been a great environment to grow up in.
She probably has very strong legs from all that early exercise and also not get osteoporosis with age! Lovely to see this neat school - got to find out where this place is!
There is a wonderful you tube video all about this school Diane....pity you can't put a link to it! Was wondering if you were on the reunion bit....I found it fascinating.
No, but my mum is in the 1930-1940 photo - second from left in back row (in purple top). The man playing the saxophone is our 91 year old neighbour who celebrated 70 years marriage (see May 3rd photo).
I'm so glad you included the picture of the path. It gives a real credibility to the line "a long walk to school". Such a neat story and photos you've shared.
