I visited a gorgeous piece of bush today - (for the second time this week). As part of my job, I take students to streams near their schools for water testing and bug studies. This is one of the nicest testing places - some sections of other streams around Auckland are not as nice. As part of the programme, students propagate trees and flax, so we are doing our best to restore the streams that are not as shaded as this one. It is really cool to see so many students and other groups volunteering to help with stream restoration programmes.
Listened to a talk on National radio about this very topic today - about the restoration of streams from underground culverts (they referred to it as "daylighting' streams) in and around Auckland so it is lovely to see your excellent capture of this project.
@vega@craftymeg@fishers@happypat@kiwiflora@julzmaioro@swilde@rustymonkey@hermann@rangerxenos@fayefaye Yes - it is a great job - unfortunately not all streams are equal - there are lots like this and some that need lots of love and money to help restore them. Stormwater from roading and housing areas tends to raise the water level alarmingly after big rain…. amongst other issues that need to be addressed urgently.
