Nikau berries by dide

Nikau berries

These are nikau (knee-coe) berries. The nikau is a lovely NZ native palm that can reach 10 metres high and is found throughout the North Island and upper South Island. These berries will be from last year's flowers.
Intriguing the way the branches look like tentacles. A bit eerie!

Very interesting how this 'branch' grows out from the trunk, just above one of the rings. I love learning new things about the world through everyone's 365 pictures, yours included.

They are lovely, we saw them when we walked through the Heaphy track. But I did not see it at this level.

A very unusual way to grow out from the trunk. I'm guessing these will be poisonous.

Interesting shot, I thought the same as Taffy, they do look like tentacles. It looks quite alien.

I didn't know NZ had native palms so there you go. I always cut the flowers off the palms as soon as they arrive. so I never get to see them at this stage. Will have to look out for them in future.
