This is part of the laundry setup at Highwic House. I guess that most of us just push a button and the laundry gets washed automatically and we hang it on the line already half-dry. Using this mangle must've been a huge job back in the day.
Wow, a great find and a beautiful capture of this precursor to the modern washing machine. My mum used to have a washing machine with the wringler made up of two rollers and she used to feed the rollers with the washing to squeeze out the excess water before hanging the cloths to dry.
Fabulous capture of yesteryear. We certainly are fortunate to have our automatic washers and dryers. I remember having a wringer washer back in the 60's and that was with two babies in cloth diapers. fav
@cruiser Oh yes, mine too!
A *very* nostalgic capture for me, Dianne. Like Chris' mother, mine used to boil the clothes up in a copper (happy to explain if you haven't heard of this) and then feed them through a mangle very much like this one.
As you can imagine, when they were in common use there were many instances of crushed fingers.
Lovely, detailed capture.
The washboards bring back a few memories too. :)
Too many of us probably remember a slightly more modern version of this.....the washer combined with mangle especially. Our mangle was stored underneath the washer & I used to lift it out & slot it in the top. Thank goodness those days are done. We used to use the same old water too....whites first then in went the work stuff.....the mind boggles, I remember watching the very dirty water going out of the built in pipe!
