Today is ANZAC Day. This is the special day when New Zealanders and Australians commemorate the anniversary of the landing of our soldiers on the Gallipoli Peninsula in 1915. It is a day when there are special services to pay tribute all those killed in war and honour the Returned Servicemen and Women.
Great ANZAC Day collage Dianne. There are services being held today in many parts of Europe as well as Australia and New Zealand. We will remember them.
Lovely tribute.. I went to the service today here and it showed that although the world war 1 & 2 soldiers are very few and far between there families are carry tradition on.. nice to see some young people with their Grandad/ Great Grandads medals on..
@dide This collage is very moving Dianne, and a very appropriate tribute to those who served. Hope you do get back tonight, I'd like to see the wreaths, every eligible male in our family served in WW1, WW2 or Vietnam. Thank goodness none of the later generations, male or female, has been needed to protect the country - yet. BTW, I heard a linguistic expert talk about the Ode one day, he said that 'condemn' was originally 'contemn', an archaic term meaning 'treat or regard with contempt' (Oxford English Dictionary). As a certified English language freak, I thought that was very interesting, and perhaps more apposite than the current term.
@golftragic Thanks for the information about the word 'condemn'. I had to wait ages for the Australian flag to unfurl in the breeze as is was obviously made from heavier fabric than the kiwi flag!
@dide No worries, it's easy to see why the word has changed over the years, 'contemn' is not exactly an everyday term. Just a piece of trivia. Flags? Maybe our flag was just being a bit slow on the uptake. I have a flagpole at home but my latest Aussie flag needs mending (the edges tear off in the wind over time) so I've got a boxing kangaroo flying currently.
