I'm a newbie and this is my first time starting a discussion. I hope I am not ignored!=) I am just curious when you are not taking pics what is your other job? Assuming you are not a professional photographer.
Just tell me what you do and if you have a pic of your profession (whatever it may be) let me see it!
My name is Ashley I am an audiologist. I test people's hearing. My heart is with kiddos more than us older folks. So here are a few of my pics. I took these when I was still in school, and we took a trip to Honduras to test kiddos hearing. I wish I could do these types of things every year.
I am a newbie here too! I am a mom of 3 crazy boys! I also work part time at a hospital doing registration (admitting paper work and insurance), not allowed to take pictures at work but here is one of my fav full time job with constant overtime!
completely unrelated to the arts, i work as an estimator for a commercial electrical contractor. Brings me very little joy, but $$$ to spend on photography equipment.
@ashleycampbell9 your job sounds interesting. how did you ever get into it?
@ashleycampbell9 Welcome to project 365, when i'm not out taking shots, i'm unloading/loading trucks and dealing with .. nasty truck drivers! i had a shot of it, but i deleted it off my camera.. i take it to work with me too.. haha
@scatochef Well at least you have an enjoyable side hobby=) I actually got into audiology by accident! HA, I did not know what I wanted to do and my aunt suggested it and so I thought what the heck I'll try it and I ended up LOVING it!
Stay at home mom to these 3...First time to get a photo of all 3 smiling and my son has to have a black eye from falling at school :) I am going to school to learn more about photography, as well.
That's a complicated question :) My formal training is in biology and photography, but work ranges from graphic design to science communication writing (and even very occasionally photography!) Also a stay-at-home dad two days a week. Life is busy ;)
I am a medical student just about to start the fifth year of my degree. It's my summer holidays at the moment so I am working as a summer student in a genetics lab!
I had great fun visiting the audiologist services at the hospital as part of my course :)
@caityg Good for you! Luckily my program was a little differently than medical school. I got a 4 year bachelor degree and then a 4 year doctorate. I do not think I could go to school much longer than that!=)
Where are you from? and I am glad you enjoyed your rounds with them=)
I do public relations and marketing - I'm the production manager at my firm, which means I drive all of our graphic design work. We work with some pretty big technology companies. One of them is VERY popular on this site. ;)
I am a school librarian and..
"Stacked and Ready"
I have a huge backlog of books to process so that is the task I have given myself for January... I just have to fit it in and around all the tech requests/needs! :)
...Half of the school Tech Team...
"Cat 5 cable plug A goes into node B"
Part of my job... some of which I actually understand! These cables connect each of the computers in the school to our internal network and then on out to the Internet. Also in the photo are our 2 servers, back-up drive, K-20 router and firewall device... which may translate for some of you as our blah, blah, blah and blah :)
I don't really have any photos that depict what I have done, or currently do. I have a PhD in Animal Nutrition, spent 2.5 years as a postdoctoral research associate in the area of gastrointestinal microbiology, and then was a university professor for nearly 10 years. I then left the academic world (I did get tenure and promotion, but left anyway) and for the past 13 years I have been a freelance web and graphic designer. I never took photos as part of my academic career (except for 'fun' or personal photos) and I don't take photos as a designer. I do have lots of experience with Photoshop but I don't use it on my own photos. For whatever reason. Anyway, another science type :) I guess this photo sums it up - a mix of threads woven into my life journey.
Hi Ashley, I'm a newbie too. Where do I start - I'm the mother of a beautiful 20 month old boy, devoted wife, real estate agent, I write advertising copy for real estate agents and part time photographer...
I am the owner of my own professional search firm, in other words I help companies find talent for key roles for their company. Some know me as a "head hunter". My company website is the same as my name.
Sold my company 3 years ago (design and printing) and now am a part-time lecture in design at a local university which affords me a flexible work schedule and a nomadic existence. Couldn't be happier. Interesting thread!
Prior mortgage banker, then military wife/piano teacher for the last 15 years. Now, I am a volunteer with my pet partner Ladybug. We work with children and the elderly in hospital and teaching environments.
Ladybug came to us when she was 4 1/2. She is a rescue dog and is now 8 yrs old.
Im an air hostess/ flight attendant/ cabin crew/ trolley dolly (delete as applicable), I dont have any pics of me at work as Im not allowed to publish me in my uniform, but suffice to say even if I could, it would be an extremely boring picture of me serving gin and tonics x
How nice to see an audiologist on 365! Our oldest is profoundly deaf so we feel like we've had an audiologist as part of our family for more than 20 years now :) Currently I am what is commonly known as a "study mum" in Asia (where we live at the moment) which basically means I am living in a country, different from the rest of our immediate family, with our youngest son while he finishes school. Usually we are all expats together- travelling and working in different countries going where the contracts take us- but our son was a quarter of the way through his IB Dip (last two years of school) when my husband got a job elsewhere. So we live in Cambodia and he lives in Jakarta commuting "home" about once a month or we meet somewhere else (last month it was Taiwan) .
I am a science nerd and work as a Microbiologist identifying microscopic organisms! I love to explore the world either microscopically or the vast landscapes that surround me!
I juggle.. well not literally, but metaphorically speaking. I am a mother and single parent to two wonderful children, 15 yr & 12 yr old. I work full time consulting, but not in an area I enjoy, I am also on the final year of my Psychology Degree, plus I am on the final leg of completing a Dip in HR. Both qualifications will be finished this year, and then I will move onto a Masters programme or a Phd. Cool thread :) Welcome to 365 :)
Im an Engineering Administrator for a bus company in London - 7am start, 3pm finish - lots of time for image making!
This is the brain of one of the buses...
At the moment, I am a stay at home mum looking after my 3 little boys. But I am on leave from my job as a primary school teacher, so I will go back to that in the not so distant future I suppose....
i'm a full time masters student (studying marketing management) and full time intern at my uni, co-ordinating projects and student work experience in the music department. doesn't seem to leave much time for creativity!
This is a photo of my working, not my work. I am a graphic designer so I am pretty certain that this is as close as you're gonna get to what I do all day.
As far as photos of what I have produced? Well maybe thats an idea for tomorrows photo =)
I am an Administrative Assistant at a a feed mill that makes feed for Jennie-O Turkey Store turkeys. No pictures allowed on company property. But that is just what I do so I can afford to take pictures.
I am a teacher by heart and vocation :) I love to see children learning something new and I love to see how their eyes shine when they absorb the lesson and use it in their everyday life.
Fun thread - nice to "meet" you all :) I'm a student doing my masters and currently I am doing an internship at the Danish Embassy in Jakarta, Indonesia. For the next couple of months I'll "just" be a traveller (can't wait!) travelling through Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand. Hopefully I'll get some good photos from these beautiful places :)
I don't have a photo of myself at the embassy yet - I'll have to bring my camera to work tomorrow!
But here is a shot of me during class:
And what I used to do (working in a kindergarden):
I work for a company at Schiphol Amsterdam Airport which lends assistance to passengers with reduced mobility or physical limitations (ie sight, hearing). It's a great place to work... and people watch.
@michaelelliott wow who knew you were so important!? :-)
I was a private gardener, now I'm an 'heir hunter'......I search for relatives for people who die intestate (leave no will) and hopefully help them to recieve some money! Lucky enough to have had 2 jobs which are both my hobbies!
I (Chris) am a slave to Corp-o-Rat America. No need to post a picture, because I don't want to visualize it any more than I have to. Also a Full time student, as I am wanting to embark on my second career in Teaching College, since I do not want to function as a drone in Corporate Society any longer!
Wow. Am I the only one who works for a newspaper and/or magazine? Would have thought there would be a ton of them ;) Maybe b/c we get paid squat most of us can't afford the camera equipment -- ha! I'm an editor, writer, photographer, graphic designer, innovator, web designer. It's the life of a small-town journalist :)
Here are some photojournalism shots I took last year:
Women Build:
I'm a journalist in a small town so I get to write about anything and everything for the regional paper - and the best bit is I work from home so I'm a full-time mum at the same time.
Some pics from stories I covered last year:
politicians + a shiny shovel = cheesy grins :-D
The flying kangaroo lands at the local airport for the first time (except for the emergency landing time but that's another story.......)
Number 41 wearing green is a local boy who keeps winning trophies
i am a renaissance woman; i write, take pictures and make stuff. occasionally i get paid to do these things.
i am technically challenged so i have yet to successfully add a picture to a post. i feel accomplished to have come this far with texting and blogging.
I'm a stay at home mom right now but my career has been as a speech and language pathologist. I mainly work with children who are deaf or hard of hearing (using cochlear implants/hearing aids) that are learning to listen and speak. I love being with my kids but I do miss my job :(
@palusami That is so interesting! Where are you from originally? I would love to know more about audiology in other countries, and how things with deaf and hard of hearing kiddos are handled. Your life sounds pretty exciting too! I would love to travel like that!
@beanieshr Awesome! I almost did the speech path thing but decided at the last minute I would try audiology! At my job now I only work with kids who wear hearing aids, but I miss my CI kiddos. I love SC I could so live there!
I mostly daydream about what I'd like to be when I grow up. And when not behind the camera or lost in dream world I teach special education at the elementary level. No shots of it yet.
@marilyn You are a school librarian and ..."stacked and Ready"?! Holy Cow haven't you been reading the discussions? This is a good way to get another one going!!! ;~}
I work in the music business, always have done, currently work for a record company doing international marketing and promotion. Worked for another record company for a very long time and was made redundant 2 years ago, actually today ! And have been at this company doing a maternity cover, 1 year, actually to the very day ! This job finishes in March, and I will be sad to leave as it's been amazing. Every day is different, I get to go to great gigs ,hear amazing music and enjoy my working day. Here are a couple of shots - the first what I posted just yesterday - amps that live in the lobby of the office and the second, at an event for one of the artists I work with....
I work in a primary school, managing a counselling service for the children - and I've taken a few photos during the year of my room and some of the toys I've got in there :o)
By day I am a software developer...not very exciting to take pictures of. That is, unless I take pictures of my penguin coffee mug...that's interesting. By night I have a mobile DJ company :)
I make maps, more specifically I work with geographic information systems GIS. currently working for a utility company but in the past I made nautical charts for ship's navigation systems. That was an interesting job, wish I had some pictures to supplement
@steeler oh gawds jealous as! I havent' been diving in way too long. This might sound odd, but had I learned diving in someplace as great looking as that I'm not sure I'd like it as much. My exit and early dives were in a 42F quarry in virginia with almost no viz *lol*
I work in Quality Assurance for Social Services. Simply put, I make sure that caseworkers are doing their jobs correctly so that the clients get the correct Food Stamps, Medicaid, etc. I am also a full-time student and will be graduating this August.
I sadly don't have a picture to represent either, but I'm sure I could get one of me pulling my hair out. That would pretty much represent both "jobs" :D
Welcome to 365, Ashley! I'm a journalist by trade, but also a mother of four, grandmother to one, food columnist, gardener, and chief cook and bottle washer. This is a photo from my first year that tries to capture all the things I did that day.
I work in a vegetable factory, grading onions. It's not the most glamorous job, but after being unemployed for 9 months last year, I'm happy I have now have a job that pays the bills (& funds my concert addiction.)
I'm a drug worker, until December I was employed by the NHS but then we were privatised so I'm now getting used to the difference of working for a private company.
i work in the corporate offices of aeropostale...working with the sales numbers and stuff...spreadsheets are boring, so here's a pic of plaques and other stuff with our name plastered on it on my desk
I'm a Mum to one lovely daughter
and to earn a crust I dabble in a few things - I'm a freelance writer (no picture of that though a sneaky link to my soon to be launched book blog http://thebuddingbookworm.blogspot.com/)
and I make & sell knitted children's clothing
I market game lodges in Southern Africa. Today I was dealing with the results of tropical storm Dando that flooded one of our camps in Mozambique, Machampane Wilderness Camp.
Tomorrow I am putting together adverts for the Bushman-owned lodge in the Kgalagadi (Kalahari) desert, !Xaus Lodge
I work in a not for profit law office that advocates for individuals with disabilities, which is also a federally mandated protection and advocacy program. I work with attorneys, but I'm not an attorney, I spend my day interviewing potential clients, and providing information and referral on a wide variety of laws, like ADA, fair housing, etc. At least 50% of my work is talking to parents in Oregon about special education and their child's rights to services.
I retired from nursing & Health Visiting 4 years ago and I now work in rural areas of Bedfordshire helping people to access information about benefits, healthy living, transport issues, support for family carers, home security, finding a job, volunteering, you name it - I help people with it! The project is called "Just Ask" and for the other part of my job, I help set up Good Neighbour Schemes again in the rural areas to help communities to help more vulnerable members with things such as changing a light bulb, collecting prescriptions, taking them to GP and hospital appointments so it is very varied and very interesting. I meet some really nice people and it is good to be able to help them. To find my clients I go to over 60s groups, childrens centres and anywhere where there are likely to be people needing help. I work very closely with Safer Neighbourhood Teams, Fire Service and other organisations
My day job is purchasing computers and technology equipment for an Engineering consulting company.
My most rewarding job is as a single mom to a Kindergartner :)
I wear two hats (figuratively) - I am a Forensic Examiner (Crime Scene Investigator) with the state police department, which is a fancy way of saying I am a Police Photographer, Fingerprints guy, Blood guy etc. I'm basically a lab-geek, with a gun.
Me at work:
My "ride":
I also run my own business, shooting everything from newborns to weddings, with a focus on fine art portraiture:
I use mostly Canon gear, for both my jobs - two Canon 50D cameras (both about to be upgraded), a 5D Mark II, a 400D (my point and shoot camera, if you like), and a lot of lenses, speedlights, studio lights etc. Before digital, I used mostly Nikon gear.
@jinximages Awesome! If I did not have to take all those crazy sciences starting way late in school I would have majored in forensics! I so oddly interested into that stuff! =)
@ashleycampbell9 There are times I love my job, and times I really wish I'd done something else with my life. While the work is often interesting, there are those days when, while picking up body parts and discussing last night's dinner, that one starts to think that's not how things are supposed to be...
I am Krista and am doing year 2 with my hubs Chris. I am a stay at home mommy (but work as a PRN nurse RARELY) and my hubs is a software engineer and graphic artist.
Here is one of my husband and I as a team: :)
or this one
and as a mommy
@jinximages Yes I can see where that would have its downfall. When it came down to it I am not sure I could do it! So I just watch true crime shows to satisfy my fascinations!=)
Great thread @ashleycampbell9 !! I'm an occupational therapist at a rehab hospital- current masquerading as a patient. It's a long story but I'm off work for a bit, being a stay at home mom to two little people :)
I'm a Stay@Home Dad & Online Marketer, which makes people either think I have nothing to do during the day or that I don't know what "hard work" is. Neither could be further from the truth. Keeping up with three kids that attend three different schools in three different cities while remodeling our house keeps me busy. And as for working hard, I'm a retired U.S. Army First Sergeant, former Chief Deputy Sheriff and I recently retired from being a volunteer firefighter. You know, easy stuff. :-)
@emsabh They tell me it's not. Honestly, we tend to be pretty dark, but you guys... you're something else again. Haha! At least our subjects are nearly always dead. ;)
Wow, so many interesting jobs! Mine feels very dull by comparison: I'm a media officer for a medical research charity, mainly working on science-related news stories. I work with a great bunch of people and for a great cause, so I consider myself one of the lucky ones.
I have a degree in Medical Transcription but have unfortuneatly been unable to find a job around this small town I live in. I was a Lead Server/Supervisor at our local retirement home but quit because of bad treatment from my supervisor after she found out I was pregnant. So now I am a SAHM and I plan to get certified as a Pharmacy Tech and finish my bachelors in Medical Administration I started a few years back. Here is a photo of the "bun in the oven" and what I love doing in my spare time aside from taking photos of everything lol.
We found out we're having a boy, Jace Edwin :)
And right now I am working on a cross stitch project for my 8 yr old step daughter, her favorite painting is Starry Nite so that's what I'm doing for her b-day in March.
I am currently underemployed as a IT tech support engineer. It's mind numbingly boring, the only good thing is I can bum around most of the day and look st all your photos ;-)
I am a Nursery teacher. 3-4 year olds in a Primary School. Two 3-hour sessions with 39 small children leaves very little time to take photographs. The rest of the time I walk the dog and read!
Hi Ashley & everyone! What an interesting thread you started!
In addition to my passion for photography, I am a work-from-home artist, crafter, writer & blogger. I sell my photographs and other creations (jewelry, decor, collage, encaustic art, mixed media, etc.) at local arts & crafts fairs, markets, shows, and other special events. I have frequent exhibits of my photography & other art in local businesses and galleries. I am also an avid thrift store shopper and resell the treasures I discover at vintage/flea markets and online. I am also hoping to open an etsy shop of my creations soon. Luckily, I am not in a personal situation where I have the need to "make a living" off my creative endeavors, (good thing too, lol!) and I absolutely love (and am very grateful for) the ability to indulge in my passions and not have to go to a "real" job everyday anymore! What I get to do now has always been my "dream job"! :)
I'm so glad somebody had the nerve to start a thread like this! I was dying of curiosity! I am an adult counselor at a shelter for homeless women, children and youth.
I'm a 1:1 aide in a special needs classroom at our local public school. In my free time, I'm a wife of 18+ years and Mom to 3 kids ages 17 (son-autistic), 15 (daughter) and 12 (son).
@ashleycampbell9 Hi and welcome! My fiancee was born deaf; you have a VERY important job! I am a medical biller.. I sit in my cubicle and huff office air all day. @marilyn "a couple of boys have the best week ever" the library has porn? @mebswartz what an adorable puddin your grandchild is!! @michaelelliott WOW @onie beautiful job.. when I was having my son it was 11 at night and i started crying because i took MY midwife away from her family; she has SEVEN children and she laughed and told me it was FINE... @erinspirations I was doing strength training last year and the gym owner is Brian Cardoza of Strong Man fame.. I was NOT losing weight but my body was rockin out and since my weight wasnt going down I stopped lifting.
@emsabh This is interesting. I was thinking about photography in this vain earlier today. There was a minor car accident close to my school, and I thought, "If I had been there for the accident (or any accident), I probably would have wanted to pull out my camera - which also probably makes me a horrible person."
I think we are all constantly looking for a unique shot, and what could be more unique than shots of emergency situations? I know that sounds morbid and awful, and obviously we get in to ethical questions of when is it no longer okay to be taking pictures of something bad happening, but my question is this: how often do you say to yourself, being a paramedic, something like, "Man I wish it was okay for me to take a snapshot of this"?
@chasingwishes LOL! I guess it goes with the title of that photo –"Stacked and Ready" My sister pointed that out to me and wondered if it was some kind of invitation! :)
@jarrettbates when I'm working, I don't think about it, even though I carry a camera with me most of the time. It's more of a privacy issue rather than a morbid curiosity - I think that if I was sick or injured, I probably don't want my picture taken. On the other hand, there are situations that are very valuable from a teaching perspective, so if I can get something quick that doesn't affect my ability to provide care or otherwise interfere with scene operations, and I can mask the patient's identity, I try to take one for later on.

I've visited folks with your job ALL my life. Partially deaf. =) I see they still have the red/blue coloring.
@ashleycampbell9 your job sounds interesting. how did you ever get into it?
I had great fun visiting the audiologist services at the hospital as part of my course :)
Where are you from? and I am glad you enjoyed your rounds with them=)
Im from Wellington, New Zealand originally but am studying in Christchurch, New Zealand at the University of Otago there.
Our degree in NZ is only 6 years (but Im taking a year out to do research so it will be 7), that is PLENTY of uni for me :)

And this is the view from the top of our building at night: (posted here on 365)
I could describe my job as chef, carer, teacher etc etc but well the easier form of it is SAHM to a monkey monster and lil devil.
Me? I own a Traditional Sweet Shop, my latest photo was taken in the shop (funnily enough).
I don't have a photo of myself at the embassy yet - I'll have to bring my camera to work tomorrow!

But I also like to bake:
I sadly don't have a picture to represent either, but I'm sure I could get one of me pulling my hair out. That would pretty much represent both "jobs" :D
I make metal sculpture as an avocation and drive heavy equipment mining clay for a brick factory in the summer time.
