Show me your snow/ice shots and share your tips

June 26th, 2012
So I am off to the snow tomorrow and I would dearly love to get some beautiful shots but have no idea where to even start. Would love to hear your top tips for taking pictures in the snow and live to see your shots!

Thanks

Although I do "live" to see your shots - I actually meant "love" :-)

last winter was very cold in Switzerland (minus 20), my battery was down very fast...so think about taking a second one if you have, and protect your camera from the coldness!

My shots of snow were a bit disappointing .. I think it never came out quite as brightly as I was expecting - next year I'd let more light in. Some of my favourite shots were taken on a macro, looking towards the sun, like this one and one that followed 2 days later. Have a great time and keep warm!

You might like to see this one of Jack Frost patterns too, up close, camera actually sitting on the car for stability!

I think the white balance is a huge factor in snow shots. I switched to shooting RAW so I could play with it after. Snow is so bright it takes some adjusting.

@monika64 thanks Monica! On my phone and can't seem to search discussions from there

@cocobella Thanks Corinne - I have heard of that - I think the coldest it will be where we are going is -5 Your photos are absolutely stunning!

@filsie65 beautiful!

@filsie65 - so this is frost on the car??? This whole concept is beyond me

@peterdegraaff lol Peter - I don't even own one any more

@jannkc Thanks Jann - will keep that in mind!

@saranna @jannkc
Agree with Jann's comment. Snow can cause auto white balance and metering systems to struggle. From memory you need to slightly under expose. Best bet is to shoot RAW if you can - so you can tweak exposure and white balance later.

Also keep a spare battery if you've got one - they suffer in the cold. If you get a dead battery stick it in a pocket and warm it up as you can often squeeze a few extra shots out of it.

Sometimes it helps to meter on something other than the snow.
Both of these aren't "snow shots" as such, but there is snow in each of the pics.

This one was taken with my fish eye lens.

This one was just kind of a random shot that turned out, it was taken from my car window.
