This is the first time I've noticed it with my uploads. By remarkable coincidence it is also the first HDR image I have tried to post and is considerably larger than my normal uploads (1 MBish vs 4MB this time).
@alpeedee There is quite a remarkable difference in the water clarity & think all of the photo has lost a little of that crispness although hard to tell with the difference in size.
My jpg of the squirrel photo I uploaded today is a lot sharper and "crisper" than the one displayed here. The file size isn't even that big (about 255Kb) so I think there must be some extra compression going on somewhere.
I think it must be different monitors sometimes. I copied them both onto my computer so I could compare side by side, and there was very little difference. The green was a bit deeper on the flickr one.
Gorgeous pic by the way.
Yes I've noticed a loss of sharpness, but only on certain shots.
My worst example, which I found very disheartening, was back in March: http://365project.org/humphreyhippo/365/2012-03-16 (Flickr version: http://flic.kr/p/bDu1Ga).
I thought the issue had been fixed as I hadn't seen it for a while, but I've noticed it on a couple of pictures uploaded more recently too.
I've noticed that with my images too. They seem to be just a bit desaturated on this site. I've started bumping the saturation just a bit to compensate.
Nice picture. Looking at the large version of the pic and Flickr I can not see a huge difference. 365 is black and Flickr is white border which might be an influence. I do wonder how much 365 is compressing on the fly which would affect sharpness and dynamic range.
I've been noticing the same thing!! I pulled up your photos in two separate windows (using the black 365 background) and compared them.......the difference is quite obvious.
I was talking to someone else about this a while back and they told me to up the saturation before I load it here.
I didn't really notice any difference when looking at both shots. But I know were your coming from I see it alot. The images on my laptop appear really crisp and when i upload to 365 they always loose some of that sharpness. Doesn't seem to happen on every shot though.....
I've noticed the same thing...especially with my two recent sunset shots. Don't want to lighten too much or you lose something...but if you don't, it's too dark once you upload! Maddening
I think the problem is that the files are massively compressed when loaded on the site, to save server storage. Most images seem to display at around 100 Kb - 200 Kb, rather than the 3 - 4 Mb you might upload. I suppose that's fair enough as it's a free site?
It drives me nuts that sometimes when I upload to 365 my pics appear darker and less sharp. I don't want to do anything to my pics to compensate for it at the expense of the true finished product. Ross@365project.org can anything be donw about that or it is what it is?
just to share my experience - I had trouble getting the image to actually view large at first, then i worked out that the max width (usually) was 1024px. So i deliberately size my uploads to be 1050px. From the Sizes available on the image, you can see stark difference here of the compression and loss. The Large below is what you will see on clicking the enlarge button, the second link is what i loaded up. You don't need to go really big on file size...

I guess its that Flickr has much more infrastructure, due to it's greater revenue generation, to be able host better quality images.

My first HDR attempt, so disappointed it got lost in the upload!
@helstor Yeah I even tried scaling down to less than 1 MB. Still suffered the same problem.
You pic on Flickr is gorgeous!
