It is that time again for a month of Lensbaby. We will get started January 1st, 2018.
No rules! No stress! Really this is just a fun way for those who love Lensbaby to join together.
@aprilmilani I like the trio 28 (the only LensbabyI own, Lensbaby is based in Portland, Oregon, so I can drive there. I have had their representavtive speak at a couple of photo clubs help manage). I like the options without changing lenses.
And now I’m wishing I’d asked for a new lensbaby lens for Christmas 🙃... I do have one for my canon but I’ve never learned to love it... it’s an 80mm which I find isn’t wide enough for my taste... but maybe i’ll give it a go...
@aprilmilani hmmm... I think mostly I just don’t know what to do with it... it seems most like the lensbaby for portraits... which I don’t do... and then I think I really don’t know how to compose an image for lensbaby... with all other lenses I know what they can do and how I want to use them... with the lensbaby I am utterly lost!
@northy@aprilmilani I'll give it a try -- not all 31 days, I know, but I'm terrible with this lens so hopefully it will help. I tend, like MIra, not to do anything with people and haven't figured out another topic that might make it workable. I have the one that's like an accordion for focusing by hand, and it's a challenge. Any critique will be useful!
@taffy@northy
I'm a bit like Taffy and Northy - I have one and don't know what to do with it! I think it's like Taffy's where you squeeze it to focus.
I'd love to learn more about how to use it!
@aprilmilani Which Lensbaby would you recommend for a beginner? I'm going to get myself one for Christmas. I shoot with the Canon Rebel T5i. Thanks for your much-needed advice! :)
@aprilmilani Hi April - can i ask a few questions?
let's say for the sake of argument i decided to treat myself to a new lensbaby... any suggestions on which one? and given my preference for a wider angle, how much of a disservice will i do myself if i buy for my olympus (micro 4/3) rather than my crop sensor canon?
also, can you remind me which versions of lens baby have the accordion focus and which have the "regular" ring manual focus like my edge 80?
@northy You said you have the Edge 80, right? Yes, you are correct in that it is a beautiful portrait lens. But, it is also my go to lens for street photography. This coming month really study this optics slice of focus. I'll be here for you. ;)
@taffy Hello Taffy, If you want to send or tag me with some photos you have taken with your Lensbaby. Let me know in each photo what you struggled with. I would love to help you. I'm so happy that you will be joining in the fun!
@dibzgreasley Oh, we are going to have fun bringing in this new year. If you want tag me with a few photos that you have taken or post the in this thread. Let me know where you are struggling. I would love to help.
So... I’m wondering... if I get the composer pro sweet 35 for my micro 4/3 camera... will I also be able to swap out the edge 80 that’s in the mount for my canon? It looks like it’s in the kind of mount you can swap out, but I’m not quite sure how to do that... even after watching a couple YouTube vids... anyhow... it’s not essential, but it would be a nice bonus if they could be swapped out... and assuming I can find a decent price on the sweet 35...
This is sounds like a great deal of fun. I'm in. Will be using both DSLR, (a sweet 35 and a circular fisheye} as well as those for my iPhone (a LM 20 and a LM 30 lensbabies.
Starting a new year with a new project sounds reasonable. I don't know, how I can afford the time, but somehow I'm intrigued to bring my lb arsenal to good use again -- on the nifty EOS M with Magic Lantern to get focus peeking (when sun permits :)
@northy Yes -- the Composer (Pro, Pro II) is the tool of choice to hold the optics. Sweet35, Sweet 50, Edge50 and Edge80 are some of the choices to "plug in". I would buy a Composer for a full frame camera, most likely one for the Nikon mount, as this will allow for use on almost any camera using an (inexpensive) adapter ring.
For the MFT camera, you may want a (more expensive) optical adapter from Metabones which also adjusts the focal length -- the "factor 2" of MFT isn't that much fun with a f.e. Edge80: it would feel like a 160 mm tilt lens on a full frame camera which only works well for product photography.

excellent idea, april. i shall be having a go. and trying to make myself use the edge 50, which i don't much like, rather than the sweet 35 and velvet 56, which i love very much :)
Excited to dust off my lensbaby lenses - thanks, April, for setting the theme for January. I bought the fisheye last year and not much blur but I love the effect.

Hello John,
You can post however you would like. I never like to put rules or limits on anything. How are you liking the Trio?
Thank you for asking! Here is a link to help explain Lensbaby better. https://lensbaby.com/learn/what-is-lensbaby/
I’m in! @Sandramardene
Hello! I am so happy to see you here! We are off to a great start. Let me know if you have any questions. :)
Besides the focal length, what is your greatest challenge?
Cheers my friend! A perfect way to bring in the new year!

I am slow to answer here on 365, sorry for that. If I take to long please e-mail me: aprilmilaniphotography@gmail.com
