Budget Computers and Photo Apps

August 11th, 2021
I've been limping along with a donated Rebel T5, (75-300 Canon lens) and Apple "Photos" ap.
Time for an (economy) upgrade and I'm curious about reasonably priced computers and photo aps folks have had good luck with.
My computer, a Macbook Air running Sierra 10.12.6 is old and resisting upgrades.
New lenses are hopefully in my future as well, but for now the priority is Computer and Photo Ap.
Thanks,
Rob C.

Affinity often has half price offer, but full price it's cheap.

Ribbet has a great "basic" program is very reasonable to upgrade- goes on a yearly basis.

So does Smart Photo Editor- one year fee and more effects than you'll ever use.

There are quite a few out there so shop around and see what you like.

I'm not up on computers, so I can't help you out there.

Apple usually has deals on refurbished newer computers if you want to stay with a Mac. I won't use anything else. I had to use an HP running windozzzzze where I worked and it just didn't have the graphic pizazz of my Mac. You might look at On1 Raw. It's well worth the price with everything imaginable to use on photos and you'll get free upgrades for a while.

Wondering about GIMP on OS 10. Will need at least 10.5 and I can't upgrade my MacBook Air. Stay tuned.

Haha I came here to recommend GIMP. I use Linux, so I can't advise on their apple version, but I love the program. I wonder though, since it is open source software, if you're able to find an older version that will work on your system. I haven't updated mine in a while and am still using version 2.8 even though their up to 2.10 at this point. Still works great.

Rob, I bought a new iMac because mine sat down on me when Adobe updated the creative cloud at that time. Takes a lot of memory to deal with photos.

I just had to buy a new computer and I went for the entry level Mac Mini and use Luminar 4 for editing. Although Mac isn't a cheap computer, the Mac Mini is rather affordable.
