Technical Challenge 106. Stop Action!

July 10th, 2020
Thanks very much to Felicity @fbailey for hosting the last camera challenge, and to everyone who participated and voted. Thank you for favoring my image – I appreciated it so much!

This is the 106th technique challenges on Project 365 so it’s no small thing to come up with something new and different (see full list below). For the past 24 hours, literally everything I thought of has been used in some form in this challenge. So, I decided to revisit the challenge of high shutter speed, with a specific focus on “Stop Action.”

Stop action is simply using your camera to catch something that is unlikely to be visible in detail with the naked eye. There are many opportunities to stop action, from sporting events to flying creatures (birds, insects) to water capture (the opposite of long exposure as in the following example):

Birds require high shutter speed to stop their action and capture their positions as in this photo by Jane Pittenger:

And here’s an example by “KV” who stopped both water action and the acrobatics of a wakeboarder:

And for a tutorial that is very quick and practical on capturing the results of water balloon popping, see:

Entries will close on 31 July 2020, and a short list will be selected on the 1st of August.

Please tag your entries technique-stopaction

Also adding thanks to April @aecasey for first creating this challenge.

I look forward to your entries,

Taffy
