Solarisation in photography is a technique from film days, where the developing black and white prints were flashed with light to swap positive and negative and mess with the tonal values. The technique was discovered when Lee Miller, Man Ray's photographic assistant accidentally turned the light on in the darkroom. He liked the effect so much he experimented with doing it on purpose.
