Brown Thrasher

Day 161 of 365: Juvenile Brown Thrasher

2015 June 10: I was walking past my flower bed today and did not notice this young Brown Thrasher in it until he bolted onto my porch. Apparently he was as surprised to see me as I was him! I immediately stopped in my tracks and stood far back while he nervously let me take a few photos before he fluttered off.

I get a lot of enjoyment from having Brown thrashers in my yard: They sing more than 1,100 different songs and imitate many other birds! (To put that in perspective, male Northern mockingbirds sing around 200 different song types. I have both types of birds in my yard, but it is easy to distinguish their sound because Brown thrashers repeat their songs only twice, while mockingbirds repeat them endlessly!)

Juvenile Brown Thrashers get their feathers and leave the nest within nine days of hatching ...so this one could be quite young! I hope that he will thrive in my yard and sing many songs in the coming seasons.
He's lovely, and so young looking
