2017.12.03 Sunday: This evening was the only visible "supermoon" of 2017. Because it occurred in December, it is also known as the "Cold Moon."
(According to space.com: The moon makes an elliptical orbit around Earth once every 27 days, while a full moon happens once every 29.5 days. When the moon is full during the portion of its orbit that brings it closest to Earth, a supermoon occurs. The moon must be around 222,443 miles away from Earth to be considered a supermoon.)
Our night was rather cloudy, so I was not able to get a clear pic of the Supermoon ...but it did still look rather glorious rising behind the trees.
There will also be supermoons on Jan. 1, 2018, and on Jan. 31, 2018. The supermoon on Jan. 31 will be called a blue moon since it is the second full moon in the same month.
Very pretty- as you know I love taking moon shots! I hope I'll be able to see the Jan. 1 Super Moon as we'll be in KY in an area with less trees unlike my backyard which is filled with them!
