2018.07.02: The area in which I live has a good many caves and underground streams -- many of which are hidden until something happens to open up the ground. Recent unusually heavy and frequent rains did just that in a yard of the other side of town, and a small 7-week-old puppy name Toffee fell down a 6-inch-wide hole into a 60-foot deep cavern.
Many people worked to rescue Toffee: Members of the local fire department and cave rescue teams came as soon as they were called. A net and a camera were lowered into the hole; as well as food, water, and some items to keep the puppy warm in the 50 degree F. (10 degrees C) cavern.
The rescuers could hear the puppy whining at times, but Toffee was born deaf and was so young that she still did not have her eyes fully opened - so they had a hard time communicating with her in order to coax her into a net.
Local television stations live-streamed the rescue efforts throughout the day and night. We all watched hoping to see the puppy rescued as soon as possible.
When the second night fell, neighbors brought over work lights so the rescue efforts could continue. Dozens of volunteers vowed to work through the night if necessary.
Finally, after Toffee had been in the cave for 31 hours, members of the fire department of a nearby town showed up with a very long-handled snare and a can of sardines to lure Toffee into the snare.
Shortly after midnight, Toffee was rescued and reunited with her family.
By then I was fast asleep, but on arising the next day we were all very happy to hear of the rescue.
This is a pic that I took of the live-stream of the rescue.
I hesitated to post this narrative of a puppy being rescued -- while the much more serious event was happening of the boys and their coach who were trapped in a cave in Thailand. I am very glad that both cases had a (mostly) happy ending; although so sorry for the loss of one rescuer in Thailand.
