24th April 2014

After our walnut tree pruning session at the weekend, we have decided to use the branches to make an 'insect hotel' hoping that bees, stag beetles or any other interesting insects will make their home in it.

I noticed that the branches have some lovely lichen on them which I had thought meant we had clean air but on some research I have found it is actually a sign of higher nitrogen levels! It is called a yellow foliose lichen - Xanthoria parietina and I was trying out my macro lens.
They look like a lace cap! Very nice colour and photograph!

Beautifully photographed, Emma. What a lovely use for the branches.

@catwoman2 We didn't want to prune the tree (full story on the 19th of April post!) but this makes good use of the branches. We've had stag beetles in the past in the garden and also toads and frogs so it'll be protection for them as well. @maggiemae Actually you are spot on with the lace bonnet - I hadn't noticed it until you mentioned it!
