Hurricane Katrina made landfall six years ago today. We were OK--and then the levees broke in New Orleans. It was a life-changing experience: I felt like I was on the threshold of hell, safe and dry on the edge of the abyss. My husband and I, sixty miles away in Baton Rouge, did what we could to help. One thing we could do was walk and feed the dogs who were housed at the LSU Ag Center. These were the lucky pets--their owners had evacuated but could not keep the animals with them, so the LSU Vet School provided a shelter.
