I don't know why I'm posting this, except that I liked it better than any I took today. My computer is getting sluggish, so I'm archiving photos and stumbled across this one. it's scanned from a film photo taken in 1998, the same day that i took this one: http://365project.org/eudora/365/2011-12-06. I read that this sugar mill has been torn down.
@layladolphin Yes, I think sugar processing is bad for the environment; the white smoke is steam, but I don't know what the black smoke is... Some farmers also burn the cane in the fields, and the EPA tries to regulate that. These mills only operate for a couple of months a year, during harvest.
I am glad you did post it, Diane. It is not only an active scene with plenty to look at, but with your commentary is an imoportant part of idustrial and environmental history. By a strange coincidence I passed an abandoned sugar factory here in East Anglia yesterday on the way home from my trip north, was unable to photograph it from the coach, and have been wondering if I might be able to get back to it one day!
These old mills are interesting . . wonderful photo composition. Glad to see this piece of history. It's happening all over the country. These places are disappearing. Nice catch, Diane.
