Air Force Academy Chapel by exposure4u

Air Force Academy Chapel

I have always admired the architecture of the United States Air Force Academy Chapel here in Colorado Springs. I finally decided to get out on base and take a few shots this morning! The wind was blowing like crazy and I was freezing, but it didn't stop me from circling this chapel several times!
Great lines on this building. I like unique architecture...looks like a modern take on the Gothic cathedral...complete with new age flying buttresses! Gorgeous photo!

Wendy! On Thursday, an American friend of mine from Papua New Guinea blogged a story to which he mentioned a dream to maybe one day live in the "Falling Water" house designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, so I googled the house and instantly recognised what gorgeous piece of architecture he was referring to. This lead me onto other web sites which discussed the top 100 pieces of Architecture in the US and I found myself looking at this Chapel and thinking how it was such a grand design for the Air Force Academy.

Thank you for sharing this view of a building I have only now known for 48 hours, but I now really like.

@hjbenson Thank you Harry! I really appreciate such a wonderful compliment and you made my day!
@spthorne Thank you so much Simon!
@bobfoto Thank you Jason!! I had no idea it was one of the top 100 pieces of architecture in the US! What a coincidence that you were just looking at it recently!!
@dcr Thank you Drew!
@dvarey Thank you Diana!! Yes, you can get on base if you have a photo ID and they usually search your car. It depends on the security level for the day, but often isn't a problem!
@sparkle Thank you Juliette!! So appreciate the fav!

question... do they allow photography on base? I know here in Australia, photographs of Defence property needs to be authorised, and about the only time you are allowed to take photos is at Air Shows. One time in Indonesia, the TNI inspected my camera before I entered their base and they said no DSLRs but PNS cameras were okay...
April 8th, 2011
@bobfoto Actually, yes I believe they do, mostly because they asked me the check point why I was there and I said I was taking pics of the chapel. The guard didn't seem to mind!

Amazing perspective of this incredible structure. I visited there several years ago and have vowed to go back with my camera soon!

Hey, question...did you delete your thread about the eaglecam? I can't get to it now?
April 8th, 2011
@exposure4u - no escort required? Maybe the military are tighter on security in Australia?
April 8th, 2011
@dejongdd Thank you so much Deb for your comments! Yes, I decided to delete it because I didn't realize someone else had started the discussion. Thank you so much for letting me know! I saw the thread with the eagle pictures, but didn't see the link for the ustream. It is awesome!! So neat you live so close!
April 9th, 2011
@exposure4u You are not alone in missing the link to the ustream, I missed it too and added it to the bottom of the thread. I think sometimes our brains just skip over details.
April 9th, 2011
@bobfoto LOL! Maybe they didn't think I looked scary enough!! They actually have a visitors center and allow people to go the the Air Force football games in their stadium too!
April 9th, 2011
@exposure4u - I think it is funny we have Private Contractors hired to provide security to our defence bases. It says to me that the Army can't defend themselves???
April 9th, 2011
Looks very abstract! ’Tis a cool building. Was there mumble-mumble years ago…
April 9th, 2011
It is quite beautiful. Fabulous architecture.

Excellent perspective Wendy. I think it's been over 40 years since the last time I was there. We're getting to Colorado this summer, but not that far east. We went to a Catholic service while we were camping nearby on that summer trip.

@rhoing Thanks Thom and I didn't catch how many years ago! LOL! :-)
