I did a maple syrup year in review story today for the local paper and included this photo with it.
Jake does not need a thermometer to tell him when the sap has finally reached the proper point to bottle as pure maple syrup. He checks it for threading straight out of a ladle using his years of experience as a guide. Boiling sap to make syrup is hot work, with steam a constant companion.
Go Jake! Great photo; I can hardly wait to read the newspaper story.
