The local dairy club holds their annual meeting in dairy barns in order for farmers to highlight their barns while fulfilling the requirements of the annual meeting at the same time.
I was supposed to get a picture of the new executive - but they weren't all there so I snapped a quick photo of this photogenic cow as she dozed instead. Turns out that it is the only picture I took today!
She has been post-processed ... so not SOOC!
Always good to see a dairy cow....collars on them? Are they tied up or perhaps hooked up when they are being milked or is it a transponder for feed rations? i think she is standing at the feed trough here but only guessing.
@happypat Yes - she is in a tie stall. They have a manure gutter behind them with a conveyor type stable cleaner in the gutter, nice soft rubber mats to stand and lay on, and they have sileage to eat in front of them all the time.
They are milked in their stalls so there is no need for them to ever leave their stalls.
@farmreporter Ah yes we used to have ours exactly like that & the miking machine was moved along each cow. Next our cows were milked in a stall abreast milking parlour , then a herringbone parlour with a pit for the milker in the centre & now there are many robot milkers going in. Our friends have just started with 3 robots this week...a massive expense but an asset you can sell if you give up with cows. They are having a very hard time getting the cows to go into the robot when they need to be milked....takes a few months but then life changes completely!
Bored or content or resigned to her lot who knows. I like you photo not sure I'm keen on the fact that all she can do is stand or lie down. But if she knows no different then I don't suppose it bothers her.
@barrowlane I know what your mean! The dry cows and heifers are let out on pasture during the summer months, and they have a free stall concept in the winter.
It is just the working girls who are kept in a tie stall all the time. (But they are working the majority of their lives!)
They know no different.
