The Scottish residents of Glengarry take pride in their heritage and pass on traditions to the next generation.
So, Maxville Public School is transformed into a boisterous commotion of organized bedlam every Saturday morning as seventy students descend on ten music teachers at the Glengarry School of Piping and Drumming. Students improve their technique as they learn music theory, tuning care and maintenance of instrument and playing together in a band over a thirty week period. Solo instruction as well as band instruction is also available. As students gain proficiency, they have the option of joining the Glengarry Grade 4 band, which combines both competition and community events.
Sally teaches Mary the finer points of swinging the drum sticks for the flourishing tenor. Sally has been playing the flourishing tenor since June, while Mary started in November. The swinging drum sticks of the flourishing tenor drum can add drama to the marching band.
Very cool that the Scots pass on their heritage in your neck of the woods. Some pockets of settlers have kept the traditions going better than the Scots in Scotland!
