Sally Ings @salza challenged me to take a picture that has either a reflection or a shadow as its focal point. Well, I was lucky enough to find a frozen pond without snow to get the icy reflections since any open water at this time of the year is running water.
Could not decide which photo I preferred, so I posted them both! (Got to love the Ace membership and the extra album for indecisions like this!)
Here is another shot for you, Sally @salza. I could not decide which one I liked better (though neither really answer the challenge completely though)
The reflections are not really the focal point here but the tree they are reflecting is just a wee bit too far away. The photo looks too abstract without the tree so I left it in.
The other shot I find looks abstract, and it is impossible to know that they are reflections but they are the focal point in that shot.
Oh. Sally @salza - I just figured out what I should have done with this shot! I should have used selective focus to blur the tree but kept the reflection in focus ... grrr! It would have put the reflection as the focal point! Hopefully I can go back this week if we don't get too much snow!
I agree that having the tree blurred and the reflection in focus would give a totally different feel to the overall shot. Nice wintery scene non the less.
Reflections are not all about water though, you can use mirrors, windows, glass or any reflective metal surface. Same with shadows, sun is not needed you just need light.
VML this, and it's much more than a reflection. The altered state of light snowfall on the ice is super. We don't get weather this extreme...sez I with fingers crossed...and it makes for interesting pix.
