Vera @vera365 challenge to me was inspired by my profile picture which is a rendition of the famous painting, American Gothic by Grant Woods. She challenged me to take another artist who is famous for his/her artworks featuring farms and farmland and recreate one of his/her images in a photo. Please provide the link to the picture in your post.
I chose to do Dale Nichols, one of the artists she recommended. Dale Nichols was an American artist who is best known for his work as a rural landscape painter. Nichols' work is often classified with that of other regional American landscape artists, including Grant Wood and Thomas Hart Benton.
In 1939 Nichols' was featured in Time Magazine. Said one Time reviewer in that issue, "Subjects he prefers are the prairie landscapes of his youth, usually snowed under. “
I found that the majority of the architectural features in his work were viewed from below, putting them high on a hill and as almost a silhouette against the horizon. He chose muted, natural colours with barns painted the traditional red.
Here is the painting I chose to attempt to replicate:
Okay - this example is a house rather than a barn but he also shows any of his barns high on a hill. He grew up on the American prairies, which influences his choice of austere settings void of trees, which I found hard to replicate here in Glengarry.
But, on the positive side - my photo is taken at the right angle, and I managed to replicate the dull sky shown here.
This is absolutely wonderful. I love the house on the hill, the fence at the bottom and the beautiful green in between. I do think you did a wonderful job on your interpretation. If it were covered with snow, it would really be exact.
I like how well you've managed to imitate the angle and shooting from below the hill, but I also like how much character yours has with the trees and beat up fence.
Thank you!
That's what I was thinking too! LOL! But photoshopping snow is beyond my limited abilities!
Thank you, ladies, for taking the time to stop.
