I got my new dream lens for Christmas! It's the Sigma 17-50 mm F2.8 EX DC OS
(don't know what all those letters after the F2.8 mean but it sure is a great lens!!)
This was a quick shot of daughter and her two sons looking at their Dad. And yes, their new Christmas shirts were that bright - lol!
I couldn't believe how wide a photo it gave me when I tried it out ... will be wonderful for group shots!
I will definitely be giving it a good workout when it warms up and I can do wonderful landscape shots.

I'm still learning all the names as well, but yes - it is a wider lens at 17 mm (low number is wider) and will telephoto up to a nice mid-range width at 50 mm.
It is my first better quality lens and boy - do I notice a difference!
i looked up your new lens to try to give you a challenge to suit it, os is for optical stabilisation, and hsm is hypersonic motor, ie you can focus quickly, quietly and easily and you wont get camera shake even in low light! it will be awesome for night sky images, i gather its very cold where you are so i wont send you outdoors. but to use those low light capacities how about photographing an indoor scene with candle light , some ideas and tips here https://www.mypostcard.com/blog/en/candlelight-photography/
What a great idea! Thank you, Kali! @kali66
I now have some time to fool around and look forward to doing some interior night photography!
I know it is really cold out at the moment but I am still thinking about attempting a full moon shot as it is rising on the 1st or 2nd - it rises nearly the same time as the sun sets so I should be able to get some good shots of it if I am organized and have everything set for a quick shot and back into warmth fast! (But won't be using my new lens for that!)
@kali66
Does it fog up going from mid-warm to cold? ... I thought it would be from cold to warm that fog would happen. I plan on going from a semi-warm vehicle to outside for less than a minute back to semi-warm and then bringing it back to room temperature slowly.
Must research before doing any cold photos! Definitely do not want to damage anything for the sake of one shot!
Will be issuing your challenge shortly!
oh you might be right there haha i had the lens fog up but it was probably because the lens was colder than the air come to think of it... it doesnt damage the lens, just puts a fog on the photo!

Thank you, Henri - this lens does seem to have great DoF (depth of field)!
I love it.
I am sure it is going to become my main lens - and it will get lots of use!
